chapter 1 (cont.)
An intern helped the doctor remove his bloody layer of protective clothing and
toss them in the hazardous waste disposal bin by the door. Then Dr. Rudison set
out for a washbasin across the room amid the clinks and clatters of his medical
team wrapping up their final procedures.
Poor woman, he said out loud.
And poor baby, with no mother, Tina replied from across the room. She was the
head nurse on Dr. Rudisons medical team. Her practical no-nonsense persona
impelled him to always request her and her well-coordinated team of nurses to
assist him.
Tina approached the doctor as he scrubbed, and she pointed to Clairs chart that
she held in her hand. She died at the exact second the baby was born, Tina
said. Talk about spooky.
Yeahand thats not the only spooky thing about this one, the doctor replied.
To say this day was extremely long and stressful would be an understatement.
Hell, I think Im even starting to hallucinate. Nothing the doctor said was
taken as a joke. I just told Josh I thought the baby frowned at me kinda
strange.
Dr. Rudison turned and stared for a moment at the dead woman lying on the bed as
nurses scuttled around to clean her up. He dried his hands and headed toward the
door, pointing in the vicinity of the infant. Run the necessary tests on the
baby and bring him back here. Im going to talk to Mr. Essex.
Sure, Tina replied. She looked at the doctor like a mother looks at her
frustrated child when theres nothing she can do for him.
He stopped and looked back. He might want to see them together before we
separate them. This wouldve been his family.
Okay doctor, Tina said.
Dr. Rudison shoved the door and disappeared into the hallway. Tina turned and
directed her team of nurses in cleaning up the blood and innards of Clair. Then
she prepared to take the baby to the nursery for tests and to clean him up for
an introduction to his father.
